- The process of moving to a new country, usually for permanent residence
- There are about 4 waves of modern immigration, not counting the original settles that crossed the Bering Straight more than 13,000 years ago
- 1609-1775: Mostly English settlers with other Europeans mixed in
- 1820-1870: Mostly Irish, German & some Chinese (on the West Coast)
- 1881-1920: Mostly Southern & Eastern European, some Japanese (largest wave of 23 million people)
- 1965-Present: Mostly Hispanics from Mexico, Central America & Caribbean
Emigrant
A person who leaves their own country in order to settle permanently in another
Industrialization
- The process in which a society or country transforms itself from a primarily agricultural society into one based on the manufacturing of goods and services.
- First Industrial Revolution occurred before the Civil War (1760-1830), primarily in spinning & weaving industry using water power & later steam
- Second Industrial Revolution occurred roughly from 1870 to 1914, due to newly acquired natural resources (from expansion), a steady supply of immigrants (labor), and an expanding market for manufactured goods (imperialism).
- By the early 20th century, the US is the leading industrialized country in the world
